Why people pick mateshare over Splitwise

No daily cap on expenses

Splitwise's free plan limits how many expenses you can add each day, which bites on a big trip or the first week in a new share house. mateshare has no cap on tabs, mates or expenses.

Nothing to upgrade to

There's no Pro tier and nothing locked behind a subscription. Every feature is in the free version because the free version is the only version.

Built for Australian share houses

Amounts are in dollars, and when it's time to settle up on your phone you can jump straight into CommBank, NAB, Westpac, ANZ, ING, St.George and more, then tick the payment off.

One number to pay

What you owe and what you're owed is netted across every tab. If you owe Sam $20 for rent and Sam owes you $5 for dinner, you pay Sam $15.

How to switch from Splitwise in five minutes

  1. Settle up any open balances in Splitwise, or note down the few that are left.
  2. Start a tab in mateshare and pick what you're splitting: housing, a trip, a party or dinners.
  3. Invite your mates with a link. They create a quick account and land straight on the tab.
  4. Add anything still owed as the first expense, then keep adding bills as they come in.

Is mateshare right for you?

mateshare suits housemates splitting rent and bills, mates splitting a trip or a party, and anyone who's hit Splitwise's daily limit. Stick with Splitwise if you need several currencies on an overseas trip, receipt scanning, or an app store download, because mateshare doesn't do those yet.

Questions

Is mateshare really free?

Yes. There are no paid plans, no trial and no limits on how many tabs, mates or expenses you add.

Does Splitwise have a daily limit on the free plan?

Yes. Splitwise's free plan caps how many new expenses you can add per day, and removing the cap needs a Pro subscription. Splitwise has said the free limit is up to four a day, though reports vary by region, so check splitwise.com for the current details.

Can I move my Splitwise groups to mateshare?

There's no automatic import yet. The easiest way is to settle up in Splitwise, then start a fresh tab in mateshare and invite your mates with a link. Most people only carry over a handful of open balances.

Does mateshare move money like Splitwise Pay?

No. mateshare keeps track of who owes what. You pay through your own bank (on your phone there are shortcuts to the big Aussie bank apps), then mark it as paid.

Do my mates need an account?

Yes, a quick one, so balances stay tied to the right person across every tab. Opening an invite link walks them through it and drops them straight onto the tab.

When is Splitwise the better choice?

If you need several currencies on an overseas trip, want receipt scanning, or prefer an app from the App Store or Google Play, Splitwise covers those and mateshare doesn't yet.

Ready to ditch the daily limit?

Start a tab, invite your mates, and split as many bills as you like. Free, for good.
